Back again with another pomade review.. And today we will be looking at Dapper Sharp Pomade Medium Hold home brewed by Luis Vargas in California.
Packaging: Dapper Sharp Pomade usually comes in a 4 oz tin packaging, however what I have with me is the sample packaging (2 oz clear plastic jar). As you can see from the picture below, the label of this pomade is very unique. It has a character on the center that looks a like Gremlins, from horror comedy film back in the 80s, but it is with pompadour hair and beard. According to the brewer, this character was actually inspired by his lovely dog that has small face and long big ears, which look alike Gremlin character. A very simple but yet very unique label.
Scent: Opening up the jar, I can straight away smell smooth vanilla that is not too sweet. The scent is quite subtle and pretty much gone towards end of the day.
Texture: This pomade comes in slightly olive green color. From the first glance i can see that this pomade looks waxy from the top layer. It has a quite hard surface when you scoop it out and after you break the surface layer, the inside is tender and easier to scoop out. While i'm smearing it in the hand i can definitely fell that this pomade is waxy and sticky at the same time. And based on my feeling, this pomade will have some good amount of hold for a medium.
Like any other day, I shall be reviewing this pomade in 2 days application.
Day 1
Application: I applied 4 scoops of Dapper Sharp Medium Hold on damp hair (Clean Hair) for today. The application goes in pretty dry, therefore i find myself with some tug and pull so I decided to put a smaller scoop at a time to make sure it is well distributed. From what I feel, this pomade is beyond ordinary medium hold as it is lend towards firm hold (medium heavy hold). At first, I was thinking this pomade gonna be hard to work with but after a few minutes and I let the pomade settled in, I was surprised that this pomade is pretty easy to work with. Combing was easy and I don't really take much time to style my hair. I can get a good amount of height and yet it is still slick looking due to the decent amount of stickiness. Nice!
Performance: As usual I started my day around 6 AM and spent my time doing activities in typical office area (Air-conditioned cool temperature). This pomade perform pretty well, as my hair didn't move at all. During lunch break, I went out for a bite in outdoor area under the sun (HOTand humid). This pomade started to melt down and lost it strength a bit, however it did survive my one hour lunch break time. When I got back to the office, I re-comb my hair, re-combing with this pomade is a breeze and I notice that this pomade is way more shiny then my initial application. This is good!
I continue my activities in indoor environment till the time to knock off, my hair still in tact due to the great hold and stickiness of this pomade. I head out to meet a friend for dinner around 6:30 PM in semi-outdoor area (not hot but still humid). This pomade started to lose it's holding strength and I have a few stray hairs but i guess it is pretty normal since it is already more than 12 hours. I reached home around 10 PM, head to the shower (without shampooing my hair) and end my day.
Day 2
Build Up: The build up of this pomade is waxy and dry, there is still some greasiness but mostly dry due to the high wax content. But i'm pretty sure with a little touch up, it will perform good. Even you patch it up with a little use of light hold pomade, you'll be ready to go.
Application: As I already have a build up in my hair, I only use about two small scoops of Dapper Sharp Pomade to touch up / refresh my hair as the stickiness of this pomade will do a great job. The application is pretty much the same as previous day, there was a little tug but it was still good. But one thing that I like that the shine is getting better today and I love the slickness on the second day.
Performance: I started my day earlier today around 5 AM, as I have some errand to run before going to the office. I was doing things in outdoor area but as the heat was not there, my hair still stays the same. Perfect! As I was rushing I forget to take a picture after my hair done, so the picture above is taken when i reached office. I can truly predict that this pomade will perform well until the end of the day. Therefore, I'm concluding this review.
Overall: Dapper Sharp Medium Hold Pomade is a good pomade to try out. The hold is definitely a firm hold (not medium) with a high wax content. This pomade is really recommended in term of endurance against hot and humid weather and definitely this pomade can tame down any curly stubborn hair. For a firm hold pomade, this pomade is pretty slick with medium shine. And for you guys, who love high wax content / very waxy pomade, this is a must have for you.
